COMPATIBILITYOFTRADITIONALCULTURE
ANDDEMOCRACY: SOUTHANDNORTHKOREANCASE
Introduction
Though the term “democracy” was first created in Ancient Greece,
the history of its frequent use begins inEurope and correspondswith time
of industrial revolution (16–19 centuries) which has transformed socio-
economic relations in all societies where new technologies were accepted
and used.
A rural society has strong traditional community relations while
an industrial society with market economy, based on cities population
activities has no traditional family relations. Extreme individualism of
industrial societies produces masses of comparatively “equal” persons.
This is
the first important consequence
of market industrialization
(industrial revolution) which prepared a
basis for building
modern type
of
democracy
.
The second
important
consequenceof industrial revolution (ordinarily
ignored
) by most researchers and political observers are
new technical
means
of delivering and realizing “common peoples’” will (being one of
fundaments of democratic power) and
new technical means of interaction
between political power and citizens. These technical means include new
print technologieswhichallowed todevelopanewspapercultureandpopular
reading culture, new transportation technologies (railways and steamers;
later— air transportation) whichmade ordinary peoplemoremobile and
powerful (aswell asmade the organs of powermoremobile).
